Gasket Questions

Performance Parts

What does MLS stand for in MLS head gasket?
MLS stands for multi layer steel.  Cometic gasket uses three layers of Stainless Steel in their head gaskets.  The center or shim layer is uncoated Stainless Steel, and can be varied in thickness, while the outer layers are thin pieces of Stainless Steel coated in Viton rubber.

There is not a head gasket with the same size bore as my block, what do I use?
As a general rule of thumb you want to use a head gasket with a slightly bigger bore as your block, but not more than about .060 bigger.

Does Cometic Make a Thicker Head Gasket than .051?
Yes, they do.  They cost a little more to get, but it can be done!  Some of the more common thick gaskets are .070, .074, and even as thick as .120!

Are the Cometic Head Gaskets reusable?

Yes, the MLS Head Gaskets can be reused.  However, if you disassemble the motor and either have the heads milled, or the block decked, you may have a sealing problem if you reuse the gaskets.

What Locks are better, 7*, or 10*?
Depends on what you're using them on.  7* locks are designed more for street use, than racing.  The standard in performance engines is the 10* for its strength, and resistance to cracking.
